  1. Will Weissert.“Officials: 1,000 Texas homes burned in past week.” Associated Press.
    9-6-11.
    Summary:
In Austin, Texas, over 1,000 houses have burned in at least 57 different wildfires since they haven’t had rain for a long period of time. Most of the destructive fires are still not under control. On Monday, over 600 houses burned, and over 3.5 million acres have burned since December. So far, there have been no hearings of people that have gotten trapped in their houses. On Tuesday, there were also a couple of other states that had wildfires. California had a fire that was blazing toward over 650 houses, and in Louisiana, fires destroyed about 500 acres, and 3 houses.
    Reflection:
I chose this article because I found it interesting that there had been many homes burned in a wildfire. I also found it interesting that there were wildfires in several other states too. I wouldn’t like to live in Texas because I would be scared that the wildfires would burn my house. It can affect kids around my age if they live in Texas, especially if they live around the Austin area because their house might get burned down. I think that many other houses will also get burned if the firefighters don’t get the fire put out soon.

  2. I am commenting on Ashton's article. I find Ashton's article interesting because it is about how God helped a man live after getting lost. I also like this article because I like to be in the woods, and I would also like to go hunting.

  3. Trinh, Lan. “To The Rescue – Finding a Purpose for Rejected Shelter Dogs.” CNN.com September 1, 2011.

    Summary
Japan; Joplin, Missouri and September 11, 2001. All of these names represent major disasters. Each one of these disasters all have something in common with each other – the use of trained search dogs to help with finding lives. Wilma Melville is the founder of the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation. Ms. Melville started her organization in 1996 after the Oklahoma City bombing. Since her organization does not get any money from the government, she depends on donations and corporate support. She gets the rescue dogs from shelters and her team trains them and then places them with rescue workers or firefighters, who the dogs stay with for the rest of their lives.
    Response
I saw the title to this article and I wanted to know what happened to the shelter dogs. I have always wondered where the trained rescue dogs come from and how they get trained. I love dogs, and I really think I would enjoy working with rescue dogs someday. The organization that trains the dogs is very interesting, because I did not know that the dogs stayed with their owners basically until they die. I totally agree with this article, and I do think that there should be more trained rescue dogs out helping in disasters. We have had so many natural disasters just within this year that need the use of rescue dogs. I am not sure how this article would impact other kids unless they had a family member that needed the help of a rescue dog or if they needed the help of one someday themselves. I think it could impact my life one day because I think I would enjoy helping this organization or one like it one day.

  4. I am commenting on Alex's article. I found it very good and enjoyed reading it. The facts were good, and I didn't know that there were so many fires in so many different places. I do hope that they can get them under control.

  5. Megan Reynolds, Danica Coto, and Ben Fox, “Hurricane Irene stronger, heads to Bahamas, US.”
    Associated Press, August 22, 2011.
    Summary:
I read in my article that hurricane Irene has become a Category 2 storm with over 100 mph wind speeds. It is approaching the Bahamas and should arrive there on Thursday, August 24. This is the first hurricane of the Atlantic season, and it is expected to grow into a Category 3 storm. The storm may have a possible striking point in South Carolina, but this may change according to its odd path.
    Reflection:
I choose this article because I was interested to know what was happening down in the Caribbean. I feel like this subject should not be overlooked because this could do severe damage when it hits. I that think a lot of people are asking about this particular subject so I think this might help. Though this a very serious topic it should not impact us here in Memphis to an alarming point, but I believe we still need to follow this storm as best as we can. I enjoyed reading this topic because I like hearing about weather events that are happening. I don’t disagree with any opinions that the writers expressed, and I plan to keep in touch with the subject.

That was a great report on the Texas wildfire, and I enjoyed how you gave exact information on the number of houses burned and the number of acres ruined. Just as a haeds-up, I read that thay have contained most of it now. Keep up the good work.

  7. Karla Dial. “Study Shows Life Outcomes of Students At Various Types of Schools.” Citizen Link September 1, 2011 @5:12pm

    Summary:
This article is about a survey that was done to show the outcomes of graduate students at various types of schools: homeschool, private Christian/Catholic and public school. This survey was done by the Cardus Think Tank and the University of Notre Dame to show the results on long-term spiritual and professional outcomes. The findings show that children attending Protestant Christian schools were more likely to apply the Christian values they learned from school to their everyday adult life and they followed the Bible and its commandments as a personal life guide. However, graduates of private Catholic schools were more likely to achieve higher and more advanced degrees.

    Reflection:
My thoughts on this article are that even though many kids come from different backgrounds it all depends on the way they see God. This passage relates to me because I go to a Christian school and many that I know who have graduated from Christian schools have
become heavily involved with their local church. I don’t know any Catholic graduates but from what I have read Catholic schools focus greatly on education and not so much on their religious views. Christian schools also focus on education but they mostly focus on Christ, God, and being a Christian. However, if they both put the same focus on education and religion all graduates will be very similar.

  8. Rebel forces have cornered Ghadafi to the point of no escape. Soldiers are now advancing on Bani Walid, one of the last Ghadafi loyalist strongholds. Other rebel forces have begun to shell a military base 30 kilometers from Misrata. Ghadafi has said that he plans to defeat NATO by sheer force. Still both forces wish for peace.

My opinion on this is the Rebel forces should make Ghadafi suffer till he has no choice but to give up. I think it is silly for Ghadafi to think that he could deafeat NATO. NATO is the largest weapons manufacturer in the world. We should send troops on public relations to make peace. That is my opinion on the matter.

  11. Jim Vertuno, Danny Robbins, Diana Heidgerd, Schuyler Dixon,Will Weissert, Paul Weber, and Kasie Hunt, “Firefighters gain ground against Texas wildfire.” Associated Press, September 8, 2011
    Summary:
In Texas 1,200 firefighters around Bastrop, Texas have gained ground against this horrible occurrence, and continue to fight back against the flames. These wildfires are the most catastrophic in Texas history and reporters said that even when the number of burnt homes reached 800 in number an elite team had already set out to find any victims. There were only two deaths reported, and both bodies were found and removed. This outbreak has made this Texas’s costliest year in firefighting services with expenses reaching $216 million, though no firefighters were laid off. The only real problem remaining now is that the state government is trying to get assistance from the national government after declaring themselves as a major disaster area, but the federal government says that they will continue to deliver help, disaster area or not.
    Reflection:
I chose this article because I thought that everyone might want to know about this devastating but non-population threatening event. It sparked my interest early, because when I read the first two lines I knew this would be a fruitful report. I felt like the issue presented in this article was serious, but at the same time costly to the state in itself. I agree again with all the opinions the authors might have presented in this article, and hope they continue to update me on this event. I think that this will definitely have an impact on kids my age in Texas because now some of them won’t have a house and a bedroom, but will most likely have to stay with friends and family until they have a permanent living quarter again.

  13. By James Dowd. “Schnucks leaving Memphis.” The Commercial Appeal. 9-3-11.

    Summary:
Schnucks is about to close after nearly a decade. Kroger has bought all of the Schnucks. Schnucks had about 1,193 employees in the Memphis market. They will be allowed an interview with Kroger for a similar job spot at the new Kroger stores. They are planning on starting the remodeling on September 13th. That is four stores that will be remodeled and will become open September 24th. Kroger will decide what to do with the rest of the stores.

    Reflection:
I chose this article because my family and I have always shopped there. I feel really sorry for those people who lost their job. Even though they get an interview, still they won’t all get their job back. Some people think that Kroger will up their prices because they are now the only grocery store. Also, what about the things that only Schnucks sold? Some people loved their things. Personally I wish that Schnucks had not made this decision.

  14. I'm commenting on Alex Hatmaker's article.
Alex, you picked a great article about the fires in multiple states. I think we should be thankful that we don't have a lot fires in Tennessee. Hopefully they will receive some rain to help put the fires out.

  15. Summary:
As our country prepares for the 10thanniversary of 9/11, we honor those who lost their lives.  However homeland security is takingprecautions for a strike on the anniversary. A ramp up in security is necessary to prevent another disaster.

    Refection:
I chose this article because I am concerned with theevents that could transpire on the anniversary of 9/11.  Yet I am very glad that security has beenraised at the level that it has been raised to. I believe it is important to memorialize those who lost theirlives.  Security is very important as we Americanshope to avoid another tragedy like 9/11. I am praying for the families of thosewho lost their lives and that there will never be another attack.

  17. Breaking. “Deadly Texas wildfires rage unabated, stoked by Tropical Storm Lee.” Global Post.
    9-5-11.
    Summary:
Wildfires caused by high winds from Tropical Storm Lee have blazed across east Texas. The 16 mile wide fire has destroyed more than 14,000 acres and has moved across the Colorado River twice. The fire has killed two people in their east Texas trailer along with destroying about 300 homes. Firefighters and Black Hawk helicopters are struggling to extinguish the fire.

    Reflection:
I chose this article because I wanted to learn more about the fires. I also have relatives who live in Texas. This event can affect kids like me. Many of them have lost their homes. Some may have been injured in a fire. I hope that they put out the fire. Also, I hope everyone can get their homes rebuilt so they can go back to living their normal life.

  18. Junko Ogura and Yoko Wakatsuki. “Death toll rises to 47 after storm hits Japan.” CNN. September 6, 2011.
    Summary:
The death toll from a storm in Japan has risen to 47. Another 54 people are missing south of Japan. Landslides and flooding were unleashed due to record rainfall. Many residents evacuated from the Kii Peninsula area. The government has set up an emergency task force for reconstruction and search-and-rescue purposes.
    Reflection:
The reason I chose this article is because Japan fascinates me and I want to visit someday. I am sad that Japan has lost people due to something they cannot help. However, the meteorologists should have done a better job in tracking the storm and warning people to take shelter. To me it seemed like they didn’t care until the last minute, which could have been a misunderstanding on the part of the meteorologists, the author, or me. I hope they recover soon!

    by, CNN's Ashley Fantz, 10-5-11

    Summary:

Think the holocaust is over, well you thought wrong. Hundreds of nazi death camp

investigations have been reopened. Witnesses of this are saying it is absolutely necessary. We

must inform people about how wrong this is and how this behavior will not be tolerated. There

have been many convictions including one of the most wanted criminal of war in germany. This

is great that they are putting these criminals away but we will never forget the holocaust.

    Reflection:

I think it is great that they are putting these criminals away . The holocaust was a tragic event

and is responsible for the deaths of millions. They criminals should be given the death penalty

for all of the lives they took. It is so sad that people are still scarred from this. I am joyful though

that this has not happened since.

By: Janet McConnaughey. “The crazy ants go marching, one by one.” Commercial Appeal. October 2nd.

    Summary:
These ants are very unusual from the normal ones you are used to. They’re costing an incredible amount of money to get rid of. They are in Florida, Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana. They travel different places in a variety of things like hay bales, plants, and even cars. They will eat anything, plants and animals. They spread like wild fire.

    Reflection:
In this article, they talk about that the ants will eat just about anything. That means they could attack our pets. Also, the people that grow plants for a living might lose money if the ants eat the plants. It is also scary to think about them traveling in hay, cars, and cargo. They could be in our cars or possibly even our food. They say that they are mainly in Texas. Some people believe that they came from South America. I really hope that these ferocious things stay far, far away from Tennessee.
