Simply copy and paste the citation, summary, and reflection (do not include the heading) from your Word document into your comment. In addition to posting your original comment, you must read at least one of your classmates' posts and comment on their article. Your comment on your classmate's post should be like a mini-reflection...what do you think of the article? This comment should be at least 2 sentences long.

Feel free to comment on more than one classmate's post! I would love to see lots of thoughtful discussion. This blog will be as interesting, helpful, and fun as YOU decide to make it!

  1. Ben Chappel. “Town of Canmore Says ‘No More’ To Wild Rabbits.” NPR. October 3, 2011.
    Summary:
About 2,000 rabbits have taken over the town of Canmore. Even though these animals appear as nice as ever, they cause problems. They can attract deadly coyotes to the vicinity. The local government is going to try and cull the animals (which many would be killed), or they are going to trap and relocate. Some are giving to funds that will help remove these furry rabbits to a different area, rather than taking the risk of letting these animals die. The city is trying to decide whether they should take a risk of many of these troublemakers dying , or pay much money to lessen the risk of them dying.
    Reflection:
This picture immediately caught my attention as I was looking through “animals” under Science. I usually look under animals because I enjoy seeing what the odd things are up to. I’m pretty surprised how fast the population of these critters doubled. I believe that they should try and relocate the animals safely before being a bit less careless. Though, if they can’t get enough money to ensure safety, I believe they should still remove the rabbits in any way because coyotes would continue to return to the town. Hopefully, this town can find a way to please most of the people in this situation.

Dan Vergano. NASA UARS Down in South Pacific. USA TODAY. 9/27/11
    Summary:
A few days after they said they may never find NASA’s Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) crashed, the space agency announced exactly where the satellite hit. The satellite fell back to Earth at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Saturday 9/24/11. It hit the ocean at 14.1 degrees south latitude and 189.8 degrees east longitude. The spot it hit is about 4,000 miles southwest of where NASA thought it would land.
    Reflection:
I chose this article because it seemed interesting. Also, we are learning about space in science so it went along with that too. I don’t think this impacted anyone because it was a dead satellite. I am thankful that it landed in the ocean because it could have hit someone’s house or a person. It is a satellite that is the size of a bus, so I think God kept the satellite from injuring anyone.

  3. Carol M. Swain. "Vanderbiit Flirting with Religious Suppression". The Tennessean. Published 9/14/11.

    Summary:
Vanderbilt University has passed a new policy that does not allow religious organizations to require their leaders to have the same religious beliefs as the organization. Organizations that could be affected by this policy are the Christian Legal Society, InterVarsity, and Campus Crusade. This policy would make it harder for students attending college there to have on- campus fellowship with their fellow believers.

    Reflection:
I disagree with this policy. I think that religious groups, organizations, and Bible studies should be able to require a leader that has the same faith as the organization. This would help students maintain stronger faith if they are being taught by someone with their religion. I think that this policy is not something that the university should put in to affect. I think that the Christian students and alumni should speak up and make sure that this policy is not passed.

Hudson, William. “Even Compliant Parents Doubt Vaccine Safety.” CNN.com Monday, October 3, 2011.

    Summary:
This article is about how compliant parents doubt if vaccines are safe. There was a new study in the journal Pediatrics that stated that at least 28% of parents thought that it would be okay to put off vaccinations until their children got older. There are about 2% of parents in the United States that refuse to give vaccines at all to their children. Some parents are choosing to give shots later, as their children get older, and some that do not want to give certain shots at all. When parents choose to not give vaccines or choose to not give certain ones to their children this threatens children who do not have the option to get vaccinations. Because of this, since 1996, there has been an increase in the numbers of children getting the measles. More and more doctors are starting to tell their patients that they have to have their children immunized according to the CDC’s rules. The CDC is the Center for Disease Control. These doctors are refusing to see these patients if they do not get the recommended vaccines.
    Response:
This article was very interesting to me. I chose this article because my family and I discuss this issue a lot. I have a younger brother with autism. I do believe that children need to get the required vaccines. I think that they should not combine them all into one shot or drop. I also disagree with doctors on letting a child be their patient if they get all of their shots when they are supposed to. I think that it is important for people to study and research shots more. As a brother of a child with autism, I think that it is okay to be careful about shots.

Josh Levs. “Nobel winner died days before award announced.” CNN. October 3, 2011.
    Summary:
For the first time, a Nobel Prize will be given to Ralph Steinman, a man who died just days before he was named a winner. This is the first time a person has died right before being announced a Nobel Prize winner. He had died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 68. If the Nobel committee had known of his death, the rules would have kept him from being selected as a winner; he will still be honored for his achievements. The other half of the prize of $1.5 million will be given to fellow scientists Bruce Beutler and Jules Hoffmann.
    Reflection:
I think that what happened is very sad. Nobody knew he was going to die, so not much could have been done about it. I support the Nobel committee’s decision to honor him anyway. I have heard that pancreatic cancer is a very bad disease, so he was lucky to live this long. This article motivated me to chase after my dreams before it might be too late.

  7. William Hudson. “Even compliant parents doubt vaccine safety”. CNN. Monday October 3, 2011
    Summary:
Studies have shown that about two percent of parents living in the U.S. are refusing all vaccines given to prevent diseases. One out of ten parents use vaccines, but alter the schedule. The problem that comes with no vaccines is that most parents don’t realize what all their children are being protected from. H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccines are leading the rejection list. With all the diseases in the world kids without vaccines are in trouble. Some parents even believe that the vaccines cause autism.
    Reflection:
I choose this article because it amazed me how some parents would keep their kids from preventive healthcare. When I am a parent I will let my my children get vaccines. I have had lots of shots before, and I agree that they are uncomfortable. I think that a small amount of pain is worth it if the illnesses can be avoided. If it is part of your religion I understand, but I would still consider vaccines. Overall I think that vaccines should be taken if possible no matter what reason.

  8. Lela Garlington. “ Germantown Teen Earns Perfect SAT Score.” The Commercial
    Appeal. October 2, 2011.
    Summary:
A 17-year-old Germantown senior, named Vivian Hu, took her SAT for the first time and made a perfect score with 2400. She said that she wanted to take the SAT once and one time only, so she read many books and studied. Vivian Hu is apart of the International Baccalaureate program and she is taking seven college-level courses and also a Saturday class on the Theory of Knowledge. She is one of 384 who made a perfect score in the nation.

    Reflection:
One of my dreams is to make a perfect on the SAT and the ACT. This senior wanted to take the SAT once and once only so she studied hard. I think if you study and stay focused you can accomplish anything. Most colleges won’t allow you to attend their college unless you have a certain score on the ACT or SAT. So if you want to go to a really good college you have to be prepared to score high on the SAT.

  9. Jay Lindsay. “Feds: Mass. man planned to blow up Pentagon.” Associated Press. September 28, 2011
    Summary:
A Massachusetts man was recently arrested for a plot to blow up the Pentagon using remote control airplanes loaded with explosives. The man unknowingly divulged the plan to a pair of government agents who “delivered” a shipment of grenades, machine guns, and 24 lbs. of C-4 explosives. The man was claimed to have been part of the Al-Quida terrorist organization, and a detention hearing was scheduled soon after the arrest. His plan was to load three planes with five pounds of explosives each, leaving enough for him to destroy the bridges around the Pentagon, hitting the capitol dome, and to then send in two groups of three men with machine guns. He is an American citizen and has no children and no wife, and has had only one other brush with the law.
    Reflection:
I choose this article because it caught my interest and surprised me, especially when I read how well thought the plan was. I feel that the issue here was definitely solved quickly and that people should discourage terrorism like this more than they already do here in the United States. I think it was amazing how the agents found out all that information and thwarted the attempt before it even started. I think this information impacts other children like me because things like these get kids doing the wrong thing, which leads to stuff like this. This article was very interesting and I hope to read about more failed terrorist attempts like this in the future.

  10. I am commenting on Jewel's article. I think that it is really good that someone got a perfect score on the SAT. I think that she will get a scholarship to a great college. It's amazing what you can do if you work at it, and it's really cool that one of 384 people in the county to have a perfect score went to school in the Memphis area.

  11. ProfessorU. “Cards rally against Lee, even NLDS at a game each.” Sports Illustrated. 10-03-11.
    Summary:
The St. Louis Cardinals rallied from being 4 down after the 3rd inning of their game. They won the game and tied the series. Their best player, Albert Pujols hit in the winning run in the seventh inning. Then their bullpen held the Phillies scoreless the rest of the game. The Cardinals won the game despite what their manager thought was not a good job by the home plate umpire. The Cardinals never quit and they got a great comeback win.
    Reflection:
I chose this article because I love baseball and my favorite team is the Cardinals. I also watched the whole game. It was great how the Cardinals never quit and fought hard until the last inning. It should teach people to never give up. Tony La Russa criticized the umpire and I think he should not have done that. You have to be able to play through bad calls or other distractions. The Cardinals did that. It was a great game. Both teams played great. I’m just glad the Cardinals won.

  12. Julie Pace. “White House sends trade agreements to Congress.” Associated Press.
    10-3-11

    Summary:
On Monday, the White House presented three agreements of trade to Congress that were making deals with South Korea, Colombia, and Panama. Barack Obama stated that these agreements would enable the U.S. to sell products oversea with more ease. Obama also said that the agreements would raise U.S. exports by almost $13 billion dollars every year. By October 13, the White House is hoping to have the final passage done, because South Korea’s president is coming to eat dinner at the White House. This deal may support nearly 70,000 jobs. The deal with South Korea may also raise the U.S. exports by nearly $11 billion every year, and the deal with Columbia may raise U.S. exports by $1 billion every year.
    Reflection:
I chose this article because I thought that is was interesting how the U.S. was making several deals with other countries. I also found it interesting because it could raise our countries income by nearly $13 billion annually. I am interested, and want to hear how the dinner that the White House is having with South Korea’s president goes.
This can’t affect kids my age because the only thing that these deals could really do is make the economy better. I hope that all of the deals make it through so that our country can start making more money, and so that our economy will get better.

Steve Almasy. “Can hot air be the free fuel of the future?”CNN.10/2/11.
    Summary:
Can hot air really be the new fuel of the future? Well, Australian entrepreneur Roger Davey thinks so. He observed that since hot air rises architects specifically structure houses so that the air rises to the roof, So he decided why not take advantage of that theory. Davey has designed a 2,600 ft. tall building that will be the second tallest building in the world that converts air to electricity. The building would create solar-thermal power, from both the sun and the wind. The sun would heat up the air to about 194 degrees Fahrenheit underneath a huge greenhouse type building. The air would flow into the tower and spin the turbines. The higher the tower is, the stronger the air flow would be, causing the turbines to spin faster. The faster the turbines spin the more electricity is made. He is not 100% sure he will be able to make it, but he has high hopes for the build.
    Reference:
I choose this article because last year in science we were talking about solar power. We were wondering if air could be turned into fuel. since I like science I was amazed once I saw this article. It is amazing how air can be turned into fuel! I was also astonished that it said it was going to be the second tallest building in the world.

  18. Nell Greenfieldboyce. “Asteroids Pose Less Risk To Earth Than Thought”. Science, Space.
    September 30, 2011.
    Summary:
My Article is about asteroids and the Earth. Scientists have believed that there would be a lot of asteroids threatening Earth. When they observed them there were not as many as they thought there would be. The NASA space telescope named the Wide –field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) just went on a mission to search for threatening asteroids nearby. Back in 2009 they launched the WISE to see if they could get samples of the asteroids that orbit the sun and their risk of colliding into Earth. There were 19,500 midsize asteroids less than the scientists expected which were 35,000. There may be some that they haven’t located yet. Amy Mainzer from the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab says, ‘However, it’s very important to note that fewer does not mean none.’ Even there are less asteroids than previously thought, they can still cause damage to the Earth if they hit an important landmark.

    Reflection:
I chose this article because we are learning about space in science. Asteroids do not pose a major threat to the earth. I am glad that the scientists are studying asteroids and their impact on the earth. I believe that Amy is right when she says that asteroids are still out there even if there are a few. In the article there is a part that says that if one of those asteroids really does hit Earth such as a big city, they could cause serious damage. All I know is that these asteroids better miss Earth completely.

  23. Ben Parr, Mashable. "Microsoft prepares Windows 8 for battle against the iPad." CNN. September 13, 2011
    Summary:
One of the world's most successful companies, Microsoft, is getting ready unveil their newest system, Microsoft 8. This new system is going to be Microsoft’s attempt to gain ground on Apple which is the inventor of the iPod, iPhone, and, iPad. Many other companies have tried to invent a tablet that will outrank the iPad, but none have come close to being as successful as Apple. On Tuesday, Microsoft will present this new system and we will see if Microsoft is even a match up for Apple and the iPad.
    Reflection:
I believe that only the people working for Microsoft will be able to tell how advanced Microsoft’s technology is, but until then we probably won’t be able to tell if Windows 8 is a match for the iPad. I choose this article because it talks about how Microsoft is coming out with a tablet that could possibly change technology forever. If Windows 8 isn’t as good as they say it is, Microsoft may have spent lots of time and money just to learn that this new system is not as good as the iPad. If it is as good as they say it is, the iPad may outrank and drop the profit of Apple. With Window 8 coming out the tablet wars will begin soon.

By: Janet McConnaughey. “The crazy ants go marching, one by one.” Commercial Appeal. October 2nd.

    Summary:
These ants are very unusual from the normal ones you are used to. They’re costing an incredible amount of money to get rid of. They are in Florida, Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana. They travel different places in a variety of things like hay bales, plants, and even cars. They will eat anything, plants and animals. They spread like wild fire.

    Reflection:
In this article, they talk about that the ants will eat just about anything. That means they could attack our pets. Also, the people that grow plants for a living might lose money if the ants eat the plants. It is also scary to think about them traveling in hay, cars, and cargo. They could be in our cars or possibly even our food. They say that they are mainly in Texas. Some people believe that they came from South America. I really hope that these ferocious things stay far, far away from Tennessee.
