  1. Aaron Smith. “Toyota: Meet your robo-nurse”. CNN Money. Published
    11/1/11.

    Summary:
Toyota Motors has unveiled health care robots to help with the
predicted shortage in human nurses. These robots are meant to help people who are sick or injured and help them to recover from their sickness while reducing the amount of work that the caregiver does. Toyota has also designed manufacturing robots that assist in factories with loading and moving heavy things.

    Reflection:
I think that introducing these robots is a good idea. I think that they will help caregiver because they won't have to do as much work. However, I think that it is very important that nurses and caregivers are not relying on the robots to do most of the work. I think that they should still provide care to the patients and depend on the robots to help out. It's amazing how much technology has progressed, all to the way to where we are using robots for work in factories and healthcare.

  2. Reiman, Nadia. “A Stone Carver’s Daughter Tells of Mount Rushmore.” NPR.org. October 28, 2011.

    Summary:

This article is about one of the carvers of Mount Rushmore, Luigi Del Bianco, an Italian immigrant, who began his work on Mount Rushmore when he was 35 years old, taking 14 years to complete. Luigi Del Bianco got a disease called accelerated silicosis, caused from breathing in the granite dust, from his work on Mount Rushmore. Luigi Del Bianco considered it a great privilege to be able to work on Mount Rushmore, even going so far as to say that he would have done it all over again, without being paid. In addition to his work on Mount Rushmore, Luigi Del Bianco made sculptures in his own workshop, once asking his daughter to sit for him. She wouldn’t do it, and she said that she hates that decision to this day, wishing that she had a sculpture of herself carved by her father.

    Reflection:

This article was very interesting to me, because, even though I know about Mount Rushmore, I never thought about the people that created it. This article showed that those people had dangerous working conditions, and still worked on it every day, often putting their health at risk. I also learned a little bit about the man’s family, and how they are carrying on Luis Del Bianco’s memory and telling others of his part in creating Mount Rushmore. It made me think more about our famous buildings and monuments that we have in the United States, and the hard work that must have gone into building them. I also realized many of these people sacrificed everything, including their health, to complete these monuments and buildings. Many of these people, such as Luis Del Bianco, were immigrants from Europe, and were very proud to be able to work on a monument or other building in the land that they now call home. I am very grateful to these people for helping to build these monuments and buildings that give the United States character and show our natural beauty as a country.

  3. I think this is a very cool use of technology. I also think that caregivers should find this useful. Jackson did a great job on this article nd I found it very interesting.

  4. I am commenting on Hunter's article. I am always interested in American history and found the article very interesting. It's cool that these people wanted to work on a monument for their country so much that they would risk their own health. Hunter did a great job on the article.

  5. Jaime FlorCruz and Haolan Hong. “Space docking marks new milestone for China’s stellar ambitions.” CNN. November 3, 2011.
    Summary:
China’s unmanned spacecraft, Shenzhou-8, has successfully docked. It docked with the lab module Tiangong-1 early on Thursday. This is another milestone in China’s plan to build a space station. Shenzhou-8 is scheduled to come back to Earth on the 17th of November.
    Reflection:
I think that this is a great thing for China. They are getting closer and closer to building a space station, which is great. I think that they should keep going and not give up. I chose this article because in science we just finished a unit on spacecrafts. I think this is a good thing to teach kids because it tells them never to give up on their dreams.

  6. I am commenting on Hunter's article. I think that it was interesting how the daughter would not sit for him, and now she regrets it. It proves that thinking things through before rushing into them or immediately saying no is important.

  7. Mark Milian. "With 'Sonic Generations,' Sega races back to its roots." CNN.com. November 1, 2011
    Summary:
The new Sonic Generations 3-D video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, made by Sega Sammy Holding was release on Tuesday, November 1, 2011, and on the 20th anniversary of the original Sonic game. They are hoping that this new release will revive the excitement about the blue hedgehog and provide the company with a new top-selling video game. Some previously released Sonic games have not done well selling, possibly due to the overly detailed story of the game, slower reaction times in the games, and it was designed to sell more to the Asian market. Sega has not been able to make a Sonic game that can compete with the Nintendo's Mario games, but their goal is to make Sega reach higher popularity.
    Reflection:
I chose this article because video games are what kids are in to now. It is also interesting to me that Sega's goal is to try and be an equal to Nintendo, which is a very successful gaming company. I think one thing that might help this game have better sale than any other game Sega is that it is in 3-D. It also amazed me that Sonic was based in Japan when it is so popular in America. I believe only time will tell if Sega has finally made a game to beat Nintendo.

  8. Troy is commenting on Jackson's article. I believe it is interesting how people can create technology like that today. When creating these robots I bet they have to have everything right to make it do what it does.

  9. Digital Life, The War Between Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Apple. NPR. November 3, 2011
    Summary:
It seems like Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Apple are having a little war. Apple used to be all about computer because that is what they sold. Google was just a search engine, Facebook was a social networking site, and Amazon sold books. Each of them wants to do everything on their site.
    Reflection:
I don’t think they should all try to compete like that. They should stick to one thing they’re good at, like Google is a good search engine. If they all do everything then they’ll all crash at one or two things because each site isn’t made for all that stuff. It just seems wrong to me to think that Amazon would be having a payment service. They should put a little extra stuff, but not too much. This is a very informative article and I believe some people would agree.

  10. I am commenting on Jackson’s article. I agree greatly with his reflection. The nurses shouldn’t rely entirely on the robots, because what if one broke down? What would they do? They were depending on the robots so much they don’t know what to do. I am always amazed when I see technology advancing. Jackson did a very fine job.

Betsy Blaney. Us’s most powerful nuclear bomb being dismantled. Associated Press.
    10/25/11
    Summary:
The last of the U.S.’s most powerful nuclear bombs are being dismantled. It is 600 times stronger than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. It is being disassembled at a Texas Pantex plant.
    Reflection:
I chose this article because I think bombs are cool. It is dangerous to disassemble this because it is an old bomb. Older bombs are more sensitive to touch. I’m not sure I agree that we should disassemble all our bombs. We might need them if something happens, but I guess that isn’t my decision.

  12. I am commenting on Jackson's article. I think that they shouldn't only rely on the robots. Technology has more flaws than humans do. I think the nurse should still do most of the work.

  13. Monika Scislowska and Vanessa Gera. “Plane from N.J. Makes Emergency Landing in Poland.” Associated Press. Published 11-2-11.
    Summary:
On Tuesday November 1, 2011 a Boing 767’s landing gear failed to open upon its landing in Warsaw Poland. The people on the plain thought that the landing was so smooth that the gear had reopened. There were many precautions taken for the very expected crash. But not only did they not crash but they had a very smooth landing. People preyed that the plane wouldn’t crash.
    Reflection:
The truth that the article stated that the people on the plain prayed makes me feel that Christianity isn’t completely out of the media. The fact that the landing gear wouldn’t open was very scary I can only imagine being in the plane when we landed. I and many other people give thanks to God that the plain didn’t crash. If you watch one of the videos you can see that the plane landed as smooth as they say it did. When they landed the pilots were praised for their amazing performance in the panic filled event.

  14. I am commenting on Jacob's article. I agree that we should dissasemble all of our bombs so we can use them if we need to. If another country were to threaten us with bombs i think we should drop a bomb on them, IF the situation was serious enough. I hope that the team working on this bomb will be very careful.

  15. Dr. Drew Pinsky. “HLN’s Dr. Drew livid over judge beating teen”. CNN. November 3, 2011.
    Summary:
Not to long ago, a 23 year old woman named Hillary Adams, posted a YouTube video of her parents abusing her 7 years ago. She posted the video because she thought that her dad would finally get the help he needed. The dad William Adams is a Texas judge, and he works child abuse cases himself. When he was asked about it, he said that he was just disciplining Hillary after she was caught stealing. Child abuse damages the brain in growing, and leads to problems later in life, which is the problem.
    Reflection:
I think child abuse is very dishonorable to God. It is almost like hurting something that God gave to you, like your child. I would also hope that a parent would be able to tell the difference between abuse and discipline. If that dad really thought that that was just discipline, then something is definately wrong with him. I hope that all the children everywhere who was or is being abused can overcome that. Also if people growing up are abused, they may think its ok and do it to their child. Overall I feel extremely bad for Hillary for having to deal with that her whole life.

  16. Christopher Sherman and Dianna Heidgerd. “Police investigate Texas judge over video beating.” Associated Press. 11-2-11.

    Summary:
On Wednesday, police started an investigation into a family that lives in Texas when the daughter of a law judge posted YouTube video of her father beating her with a belt several years ago. The video has been viewed over 600,000 times since it got uploaded a week ago, and the investigation began when several people called and were concerned about the video that was uploaded in 2004. William Adams said that he doesn’t plan on being punished for this, and on Wednesday neighbors stated that they was him leaving with a briefcase, clothes, and rifles. Investigators may end up deciding that the judge beating his daughter weren’t criminal acts.

    Reflection:
I chose this article because I found it interesting, and sad that a father beat her daughter. I feel really sad that someone would even do this to somebody. I don’t think that the daughter could have done anything bad enough to deserve to get beaten repeatedly. Since I don’t know specific details, I am not sure how badly the man should get punished. This could affect kids my age if their parents beat them repeatedly too.

  19. Sarah Patterson. “ Common Cause” The Commercial Appeal . October 30, 2011.

    Summary:
For the Race for the Cure they dressed up in Halloween costumes. Many did this race because they saw the people who survived cancer and wanted to keep going so they could raise money. Some had even lost love ones from cancer and did the race for their loved ones. Everyone was very determined to raise more money and this year’s race was an even better turn out than 2011.

    Reflection:
I have done the Race for the Cure only once. It makes you feel really good and proud of yourself to know you have raised money for those with cancer. It is really fun to do it with your friends because you all can encourage one another. I also like to think that by doing something so simple you can raise so much money if everyone works together. My aunt had cancer but over came it and that makes the Race for the Cure so much more special to me.

Christina Morgan. “Gifting a Brighter Day.” Collierville Herald. October 27, 2011.
    Summary:
Emily Thomas got cancer in 2007. When she had cancer her friend gave her a gift card. She didn’t think about it until her other friend’s husband got cancer. She didn’t know what to get him until she thought about the gift card she had gotten. Now she has a website and has given seventy-two gift cards out so far.
    Reflection:
I think this is an amazing idea. It is so nice of her to do that. I think it is probably easier with gift cards because if you have cancer you are probably not going to want to cook, so you can just order take-out. Also, when you have cancer you need to have something that makes you happy or forget about your cancer. So when you receive a gift card it makes you excited to get a present. I think we should also thank those who have donated to this organization. Maybe one day we can donate a gift card!!!!

    Summary
WW2 Japanese war survivors are being commemorated for bravery. They were given a gold medal ceremony. These survivors were very grateful for the high honor. They have said that they love America and will never forget this. This is a strange but happy occurrence.

    Reflection
I have mixed feelings about this. These are very opinionated things and I do not want to offend anyone. All I will say is that it is great that the president is forgiving these people. This was the godly thing to do. I am happy they are not being persecuted.

  26. Gabriele Steinhauser and Greg Keller. “In or out: Europe heaps pressure on Greece.” Associated Press. November 2, 2011.
    Reflection:
The European leaders are now putting pressure on Greece, keeping the people of Athens from receiving any help from them until the results of the bailout deal come in. Greece is trying to pull away from the Euro zone, but is having a hard time at doing it. They have been offered euro110 billion ($136 billion) in rescue support for the people of Athens, but that would just result in more financial cutbacks. Now other countries are waiting expectantly for Europe to solve this crisis, and to not slow down recovery worldwide.
    Reflection:
I chose this article because it caught my eye and appeared to be some kind of conflict, which is one of the topics I like to read about. It sparked my interest because immediately I was reading about Europe struggling to keep Greece in the Euro zone, and how Athens was running out of money. I feel that the problem presented here is serious, and that if it is not solved soon, that it could be a major problem for Europe financially, maybe causing some of Europe’s countries to collapse. This probably wouldn’t affect kids my age to badly, unless they were in one of the countries like Greece. It would probably affect the kids in Athens the most, whose parents are more than likely being affected by this financial crisis.

  28. ProfessorU. “Cards win World Series, Beat Texas 6-2 In Game 7.” SI Kids. 11-3-11.
    Summary:
The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Texas Rangers to win their 11th World Series. The Series went 7 games and the Cards won the last 6-2. The night before, the Cardinals were down to their last strike twice. David Freese hit a game tying triple then later hit a walk off home run to send the series to a game 7. David Freese won MVP of the series.
    Reflection:
I chose this article because I love the Cardinals and baseball. I watched the 6th and 7th game of the series and thought the Cards had no chance to win. The Cardinals never stopped fighting, even down to their last strike. It teaches us to never quit and that if you keep trying anything is possible. I think it is very sad for the Rangers because it is the second year in a row they have lost the World Series. It was a great series and both teams fought hard. Go Cardinals!!!

Jordan Calmes. “Snuffing Out Snakeheads By Putting It On The Plate.” NPR. 10/27/11.
    Summary:
Snakehead fish have been in United State’s rivers. Now because they are so hard to get rid of, people are trying to get rid of these fish by getting fisherman to fish for them. They tried to get them to fish for them by serving it, and seeing if people the dish. People seemed to like it, so this may be a success. The only problem is these foreign fish are hard to catch.
    Reflection:
I found this article because once again, I looked under animals because my interest for them is great. I’m glad that these fish are most likely going to be caught and eliminated from this country, because they cause a great deal of problems. They are extremely aggressive fish and I believe they shouldn’t be here. It is interesting how they actually tasted good, because I thought it would taste pitiful. Now, I’m actually thinking about trying it one day. Hopefully, due to this supposedly “enjoyable” tasting fish will start being caught, killed, and sold by fisherman to lessen their population. If this doesn’t work, they will certainly need to find another plan to stop these rude and aggressive fish.
